Recreation park “Elfrather See”
The recreation park “Elfrather See” is known beyond the city limits of Krefeld. Krefeld Zoo
In 1938, the zoo of Krefeld was inaugurated as a municipal zoo in the grounds of the park surrounding the small castle of Grotenburg. It has developed from an “animal show” which allowed the citizens of Krefeld to view the animal kingdom already from 1877 to 1914, being situated at the “Tiergartenstraße”.
Numerous world-wide as well as European first breedings of cheetahs, mane wolves, aard wolves, jaguarundis, tamanduas, European otters, tropical birds and snow leopards made the zoo become known all over the world and show its engagement as regards the protection of species.
In the meantime, the zoo of Krefeld has increased to a 13 hectares area and displays over 1200 exotic as well as European animals from about 200 species.
It is a member of the European as well as the world-wide Association of Zoos and as a zoo run by scientists it belongs to the Association of German Zoo Directors.
